The Niger Delta group made its stance known through a press statement signed by its National Coordinator Comrade Nwokoma Messiah and it's Director of Publicity Odongiyon Ade.
The statement said the people of the region unselfishly gave their support to the party despite all odds and it's support according to the group was reflective in the victory which the party recorded in the elections.
It said abandoning the region to zone the Senate Presidency to a region outside the South South will not go down well with the region which aside giving the ruling party massive votes, also boasts of being the region that lays the proverbial golden eggs for the federal Republic of Nigeria in a relatively peaceful environment.
"the South South region has remained relatively peaceful all these years that the APC has been in power despite being the major revenue generating region in the country.
This relative peace in the region can be sustained through the acknowledgement of its efforts by the ruling party by zoning the position of the office of the Senate President to the region. This will surely give the people a strong sense of being stakeholders in the Nigerian project under the Presidency of Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu. Anything less than this will not be acceptable to the people" the statement said.
Specifically, the group said it is supporting Sen. Godswill Akpabio for the position of the Senate President considering his political pedigree and the support he gave to the party and the President elect Sen. Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
The group described Sen. Akpabio as a ranking Senator and a team player who is also a visionary leader.
"it is on record that Sen. Akpabio was the first presidential aspirant who saw the victory of Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu during the primaries where he boldly stepped down his ambition for president during the primaries.
He is also a visionary leader whose leadership as governor of Akwa Ibom remains a reference point in responsible and responsive leadership.
Considering the leadership thrust of the Tinubu administration, it will be to the best interest of the party to give him the opportunity of being part of the generation of Nigerians that will bring about the needed political change in the country without any rancour under the able leadership of Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu"
The group posited that the issue of religious balance which Nigerians have craved for will be balanced with the emergence of Sen. Godswill Akpabio as the President of the incoming Senate.
It pleaded with other incoming members of the Senate to bury their ambitions and rally round Sen. Akpabio stressing that any attempt to do otherwise will not augur well for the country in any way whatsoever.
It reiterated it's support and loyalty to the President elect whom it described as a pragmatic leader with the capacity to perform and deliver on his promises to bring about positive change.
"we make bold to state that we as the people of the south south region and the Niger Delta remain unequivocally grateful to God over the emergence of Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu whom we supported strongly.
Politics is a game of objectivity and not a game of sentiments. Abandoning the people for any other region based in sentiments will amount to gross betrayal which we believe our pragmatic and people oriented president elect will not allow to happen.
We believe and trust in his ability to urge the party to do the needful and not to heed to any other call based on sentiments that will not help the party or be beneficial to the Nigerian project" the statement added.
