UNITED NATIONS(UN) WORLD PEACE DAY.
Attention:
Peace lovers, Corporate, Political, Spiritual, Traditional Leaders & Fellow Citizens.
A Peace Ambassador's Solution for Lasting Peace in Nigeria.
Introduction:
Nigeria stands today at a critical crossroads, between the path of unity and the pull of division. As a Peace Ambassador, I cannot be silent in the face of the selective justice, state-sanctioned hypocrisy, and dangerous double standards that continue to sow discord in our nation.
It is hypocritical and unconscionable for any government to label some groups as terrorists while openly negotiating with others who have unleashed terror on innocent lives.
We cannot speak of peace while nurturing injustice.
We cannot call for unity while feeding the fires of inequality.
The time has come to build peace not just in words, but in policy, in action, and in spirit.
A 7-Point Peace Solution for Nigeria
1. Justice Without Borders or Bias:
True peace begins where justice is impartial.
We must:
Stop the politicisation of justice.
End double standards in how security agencies treat different groups.
Review and reassess the terrorism designation placed on groups like IPOB, especially where there is evidence of non-violent agitation.
Apply the same urgency and legal weight in prosecuting all armed groups, regardless of ethnicity, religion, or region.
Justice must not be tribal.
It must be truthful.
2. National Dialogue and Reconciliation:
We need a truthful, inclusive National Dialogue, not a cosmetic conference with recycled elites.
Bring together stakeholders from every region, including youths, traditional leaders, faith leaders, civil society, and even those with dissenting voices.
Let grievances be heard without intimidation.
Create a Truth and Reconciliation Commission modeled after South Africa’s, to openly address historical injustices and ethnic wounds.
3. Constitutional and Structural Reform:
Our current structure fuels inequality, discontent, and marginalisation. We need:
True federalism: where states control their resources and manage their development.
Restructuring: to decentralise power and give all regions a sense of ownership.
Amend sections of the Constitution that give disproportionate control to the centre, and restore dignity to every region and ethnic group.
4. Security Sector Reform:
Security agencies must protect citizens, not persecute them.
End the culture of militarisation in civilian zones.
Train security forces in conflict de-escalation, human rights, and non-violent engagement.
Establish independent civilian oversight of security operations to reduce abuses and rebuild public trust.
5. Economic Inclusion and Youth Empowerment:
Poverty and hopelessness are breeding grounds for unrest.
Invest heavily in skills acquisition, job creation, and entrepreneurship for young people.
Prioritise development in historically neglected regions to reduce resentment and build economic peace.
6. Media and Narrative Control:
Counter tribal and hate-filled narratives with truth, empathy, and shared values.
Support media platforms that promote unity in diversity, and fact-based reporting.
Crack down on hate speech from all corners, including those in positions of power.
7. Leadership Accountability and Civic Education:
A people must know their power, and leaders must know their limits.
Promote civic education at all levels—so citizens understand their rights and responsibilities.
Demand accountability from leaders through peaceful democratic tools, not violence.
My Final Word: Peace Is Not the Silence of Guns, But the Presence of Justice
Let it be known:
No region wants war; they want respect.
No group wants to break away for the sake of chaos; they want fairness.
And no people will remain silent forever where justice is denied.
To those in power: You cannot preach peace while practicing provocation.
To fellow Nigerians: Let us not turn against each other, the system that divides us fears our unity.
To the world: Don’t just call for peace, call for balance, for fairness, and for truth.
MAY NIGERIA RISE:
Not on the bones of its citizens, but on the strength of their dignity.
May the cries of the oppressed never again be drowned by the drums of hypocrisy.
And may the pythons that once danced in vain finally find rest in a nation where peace is not a performance, but a promise kept.
