The International Association of World Peace Advocates (IAWPA) has announced that it is deeply saddened by the devastating 7.3 magnitude earthquake that struck the Republic of Vanuatu, affecting approximately 80,000 people, leaving 12 dead and over 200 injured.
The global peace advocacy group with Special Consultative Status under the Economic and Social Council ECOSOC of the United Nations through its International Spokesman Amb Emmanuel Nkweke said as an organization committed to promoting peace, tolerance, and sustainable development, it stands in solidarity with the people of Vanuatu during this challenging time. "Our thoughts and prayers are with the families of the victims, and we wish those injured a speedy recovery" the statement said.
In response to this disaster, the statement said IAWPA, through its recently launched Humanitarian Corps, will initiate plans to rally support from well-meaning individuals and organizations to donate humanitarian aid to the Republic of Vanuatu. "We believe that it is our collective responsibility to provide support and assistance to those in need".
The group commended the Government of Japan for its prompt response in providing emergency relief goods, including jerry cans, water purifiers, and generators, to support the affected communities. It also acknowledge the efforts of the United Nations and humanitarian partners in mobilizing support for the ongoing response while calling on the government of Nigeria to also show support and solidarity.
"We urge all well-meaning individuals and organizations to join us in supporting the people of Vanuatu during this difficult time. Together, we can make a difference and provide hope to those affected by this disaster" the statement concluded.
