The House of Representatives has appointed Hon. Victor Obuzor, the member representing Ahoada-West/Ogba-Egbema-Ndoni Federal Constituency, as the Chairman of the newly established Ad-hoc Committee tasked with investigating allegations that the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) has been involved in funding Boko Haram and other terrorist groups operating in Nigeria.
This development follows the adoption of a motion of urgent public importance, sponsored by Hon. Inuwa Garba, in response to claims made by U.S. Congressman Scott Perry. During a congressional hearing, Rep. Perry alleged that USAID allocated approximately $697 million annually, along with cash shipments, to organizations linked to terrorism, including Boko Haram, ISIS, and Al-Qaeda.
The House, acknowledging the gravity of these allegations, has mandated the Ad-Hoc Committee to conduct a thorough investigation into the activities of international and local non-governmental organizations (NGOs) operating in Nigeria.
Hon. Victor Obuzor in a press briefing expressed his determination to lead the investigation with diligence, transparency, and objectivity. He emphasized the need to protect Nigeria’s sovereignty, and strengthen efforts in combating terrorism.
“These are serious allegations that, if proven, could have significant implications for our national security. Our committee will leave no stone unturned in uncovering the truth and ensuring that any threats to Nigeria’s stability are addressed decisively,” He stated.
The Ad-hoc Committee is set to assess the real identities of NGOs and INGOs in Nigeria, their sources of funding, and how their financial resources are utilized.
