The Lagos State Police Command has taken decisive action against one of its officers, Sergeant Ekpo Shimuyere, who was found guilty of extorting N98,000 from a young man. The officer, attached to the Sogunle Division, was dismissed and disrobed by the Provost Department of the command after a thorough investigation.
According to the command's spokesperson, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, the investigation was triggered by a complaint from the victim. "We got the complaint from the victim and the officer denied the crime when he was contacted. The command placed him under detention so that he will not tamper with the evidence." The police obtained the officer's statement of account, traced the money, and invited the victim and the POS operator for testimony.
The officer was put through an Orderly Room trial, and the Commissioner of Police, Lagos Command, Mr. Idowu Owohunwa, reviewed the trial and approved the punishment of dismissal from the force. Hundeyin emphasized that the officer's actions were against the ethics of the profession and warned that the command would continue to punish police officers who engage in unprofessional conduct.
