Former Defence Information Director Abducted Last Month, Death Confirmed by Military, Katsina Govt.

ABUJA, Nigeria - Retired Major-General Rabe Abubakar, former Director of Defence Information, has died while in captivity after being abducted by bandits in Katsina State last month, the Defence Headquarters and Katsina State government confirmed Tuesday.

Military authorities said news of the retired officer’s kidnapping was withheld at the time to avoid compromising sensitive rescue operations aimed at securing his release.

According to the Katsina State government, Gen. Abubakar died from natural complications during his period in captivity. The Defence Headquarters described his death as a significant loss to the Nigerian Armed Forces and the nation.

Gen. Abubakar served the country in various senior command and information roles before his retirement. He was widely respected for his contributions to military public relations and national security communication.

The Defence Headquarters extended condolences to his family, colleagues, and the Nigerian military community.

Tributes have since poured in from across the country, with many describing his passing as “a profound loss” for a nation battling persistent insecurity in the northwest.

His remains and funeral arrangements are expected to be announced by the family in due course.
