BONNY ISLAND, Rivers State – The African Women Mentoring and Inspiring Initiative, AWMII, has delivered a major community health intervention in Bonny Island, Rivers State, providing free medical care, screenings, and welfare support to hundreds of residents.
The outreach, held on Friday, 30th May 2026, was conducted in partnership with key health stakeholders and sponsored by Nigeria LNG Limited, NLNG. The exercise commenced at 10:00am and reached 234 beneficiaries, comprising 187 adults and 47 children.

Comprehensive Medical Services Delivered
Residents received a wide range of services including malaria testing, treatment of common illnesses, blood pressure checks, cervical cancer screening, clinical breast examinations, and deworming for children.
A total of 97 individuals were tested for malaria. Essential medications including antimalarials, antibiotics, antihypertensives, deworming tablets, and treatments for nasal congestion were administered free of charge to those diagnosed. The Association of Lady Pharmacists of Nigeria, ALPs, ensured proper dispensing of drugs to patients who tested positive.
EARLY CANCER DETECTION SAVES LIVES
In one of the most significant outcomes, 48 women underwent cervical cancer screening. Two positive cases were identified and immediately referred for further medical evaluation. On-site thermal ablation treatment was administered to eligible cases using a thermal ablation kit, with technical support from the Medical Women’s Association of Nigeria, MWAN, and Rivers State Ministry of Health.
Clinical breast examinations also revealed cases of breast lumps, reinforcing the critical need for routine screening and early detection in saving lives.
The outreach recorded a critical emergency when a young child, previously kept at home due to financial constraints, was brought in with severe fever and convulsions. Dr. Emmanuel Iyo responded swiftly, stabilizing the child and arranging further medical care. The incident highlighted the life-saving impact of accessible healthcare in vulnerable riverine communities.
Strengthening Long-Term Healthcare Access
As part of efforts to ensure sustainability, 38 residents were enrolled into the Rivers State Contributory Health Protection Programme, RIVCHPP, in collaboration with the Rivers State Primary Health Care Management Board, RSPHCMB.
In addition to medical care, AWMII distributed 129 sanitary pads to women and adolescent girls, as well as clothing items for women and children, reflecting the organization’s holistic approach to community wellbeing.
Strong Partnership, Greater Impact, The outreach was implemented with the Medical Women’s Association of Nigeria, MWAN, Rivers State Ministry of Health, RSPHCMB, RIVCHPP, and ALPs. Union Bank of Nigeria also supported the initiative with three representatives present.
Sponsorship by Nigeria LNG Limited, NLNG, enabled the delivery of free, high-impact healthcare to underserved populations in the hard-to-reach riverine community.
According to AWMII, the Bonny Island intervention underscores the urgent need for sustained, community-based healthcare programs, particularly for women and children in vulnerable areas.
